Breaking Beliefs Episode Features

Episode 55: Finally 2021 And Q4 2020 In Review!

With a year as unique and unforgettable as 2020 in the books, it felt only right to start the new year by reflecting on all the changes created by the pandemic. For me personally, as for millions of people throughout the country, 2020 wasn’t without some serious hardship and plenty of difficult moments.

In this episode, I discuss why we have to acknowledge and reckon with pain and fear rather than run from them. Last year may have been full of stress and anxiety, but provided we reflect and move forward, it can help us to grow and become stronger than ever. The episode also includes some of my favorite moments and insights from the guests I spoke with toward the end of 2020.

Episode 56: Family First: Be Present And Available To Those Around You With Tashia Batstone

My first guest of the year was Tashia Batstone, Senior Vice President for External Relations and Business Development at Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada. She and I had a wide-ranging discussion that touched on the importance of having a purpose, finding balance in our busy lives, and why health, successful relationships, and meaningful career growth can all go hand in hand.

For Tashia, much of her purpose comes from adopting a family-first approach, from the influence her parents had on her to the one she has on her children. When we align all we do with a core purpose, we find value everywhere we turn.

Mindful Moment of the Month:

The inspiration for my Mindful Moment comes from my discussion with Tashia Batstone. One of her key parenting takeaways was that “you need to be present and available.” That point is so true and so important, and not just in the context of our familial relationships. With so many stimuli and distractions in both our external surroundings and our minds, it’s all too easy to give the person you’re communicating with less than all of your attention. When that happens, it’s no wonder misunderstandings follow.

The next time you’re speaking with somebody—whether at work, home, or anywhere else—start by taking a moment to collect yourself and become totally present and available to them. Clear away the cobwebs and forget about the alerts for a second, and just focus on the person or people in front of you.

As Tashia mentioned, you can be present and available even if you’re not in the same room as somebody. Even if you’re chatting via a screen or text message, the key is the level of engagement, attention, and care you bring to the interaction.
