B3 Breaks: Mono-Tasking Vs. Multi-Tasking
This series is all about getting honest with ourselves and noticing the things that we carry with us. We each have our own life experiences to go from. Sometimes, it's hard to truly understand what it's like to be someone else and what we can do to create change to start with us. If each of us took one action each day in our own lives, we could collectively change the world around us but what does it take? It takes work and practice. We have to be honest with ourselves as we get there. To do that, we have these B3 breaks to pause and assess our thoughts before we speak to take an honest look at our interactions in our day and the energy that we may be creating around us.
We ask other people questions and learn their stories and experiences. We create positive energy with the people around us and find peaceful ways to show our support to our friends, our family and acquaintances. We observe all of this without judgment. We are present with the people we are with and we show up in love. What can we do? We start with the little things. This series is all about short practices that you can put into your day, practice this each day just for 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, whatever it takes so that you can observe your energy and be intentional with the energy you create around you because if you believe you can, you will. Our show begins now.

For this B3 break, we are going to talk about mono-tasking versus multitasking. Sometimes, what we have to do to realize that we are multitasking instead of mono-tasking is write down all the things that we are doing in our day because what happens is when we get distracted by notification, instant message, email coming in, a phone call and we are trying to get our work done, it takes us 23 minutes to get back to the thought process that we had before we were interrupted. We get interrupted at least every three minutes. When we are working remotely, it's important that we turn on the virtual do-not-disturb signs, where we turn off notifications. We make sure our phones are not near us so that we can get our own work done. Now, what we can do is just like when you go on a diet. Sometimes, it's not fun to write down everything you eat when you are on a diet.
When you are doing this and trying to streamline your work, you are going to write down all the things that you do in your day. Keep a pad of paper right next to you and write down for each half-hour what you were doing. Did you notice that you’ve got distracted by a phone call, an email or a text, and were you able to complete the work that you were doing? Were you on a conference call or a meeting got interrupted and distracted by an email, a text, instant message, weren't paying attention and had to ask someone to repeat themselves? That happens to a lot of us all the time. It's a practice to make sure that we can stay present in what we are doing. When we manage our calendar, if we set time aside for these little breaks in our day, 5 minutes, 10 minutes on our calendar and we protect those, those are the times that we can respond to emails, texts and instant messages so that we can stay focused on the meetings that we are in and the work that we are doing.
If you feel like you are working too much, you are not sure why things aren't getting done or this new way of working is hard, this is one way that you can start streamlining your work and taking back the control. As a review, take a pad of paper and write down everything you are doing in your day. As you are working on something and if you’ve got interrupted, note it. Make sure that you are turning on those virtual do-not-disturb signs. You can turn off notifications on your computer. You can also close out applications that are interrupting you and you can turn on the do-not-disturb on your phone so that you can stay singular focus you are not overworking when you are remote working.
