B3 Breaks: No Guilt for "Me-Time"

This series is all about getting honest with ourselves and noticing the things that we carry with us. We each have our own life experiences to go from. Sometimes it's hard to truly understand what it's like to be someone else. What we can do to create change starts with us. If each of us took one action each day in our own lives, we can collectively change the world around us. What does it take? It takes work. It takes practice. We have to be honest with ourselves as we get there. To do that, we have these B3 breaks in order to pause and assess our thoughts before we speak, to take an honest look at our interactions in our day and the energy that we may be creating around us.

We ask other people questions and learn their stories and experiences. We create positive energy with the people around us and find peaceful ways to show our support to our friends, our family acquaintances. We observe all of this without judgment. We are present with the people we are with and we show up in love. What can we do? We start with the little things. This series is all about short practices that you can put into your day. Practice this each day for 2, 5, 10 minutes, whatever it takes so that you can observe your energy and be intentional with the energy you create around it. If you believe you can, you will. Our show begins.

For our B3 break, we're going to talk about whether you are overworking and not taking time for yourself or the people around you. One of the things that I hear over and over from people contacting me is that they're working more hours than they've ever worked before and they can't find time for themselves. Plus, many of us have kids at home that are doing virtual learning and still trying to get our work done. It's important in these times that we don't lose the fact that we need some time for ourselves to reset. What happens is when meetings start getting scheduled on our calendar, we may feel guilty if we block time on our calendar for our own stuff that could mean working out, that could mean watching a TV show, and that could mean going to sleep. You are the example. If you aren't doing this, then your staff isn't going to do it as well. It's important that we all show that it's important to take that quality time for ourselves so that we can recharge.

You can put 30 minutes on your calendar, 60 minutes on your calendar. Maybe you determined that the best time for you to do it is in the morning before the kids get up before the workday starts. Whatever it is, block that time and make sure that you don't give it away. The problem is when we give away that time, we start getting anxious. We start having more tension. We start having more stress. We can't focus on our work. When we're going into meetings, we might be showing up frustrated rather than more relaxed or more present in that meeting so that we can get the things done that we want to get done. What I'm asking you for your B3 break is take a look at your calendar. Don't make excuses. You can make the time. Find that time on your calendar, whether it's in the morning, midday, or end of day. When are you going to cut things off so that you can separate that time that you need?

For those of you that might not have workout rooms at home, there are lots of virtual streaming from yoga studios like mine and other fitness places all around the country that are trying to help you right inside your homes to keep that fitness regimen going. When we start feeling unhealthy, then that tension, that stress, that buildup of frustration keeps going as well. Take a look at your calendar. See where you can block out at least 30 minutes or 60 minutes a day for yourself. That can mean taking a walk outside, reading a book, listening to music, or streaming something online. Maybe it's reaching out to a friend, family member, and having some human connection outside of work so that you don't get overwhelmed and burned out. Take this time so that you can recharge for yourself and be better for the people around you.
